Summer Term 2

Year 3 

In Year 3, pupils will look at how babies grow, identifying that in animals and humans lots of changes happen from birth to being fully grown. Pupils will also look at understanding what a baby needs to live and grow and how the baby develops in the mother's uterus. Pupils will then move onto looking at how boys and girls' bodies change on the outside as they grow up. We will then look at identifying how boys' and girls' bodies change on the inside and why these are necessary so that bodies can make babies when they grow up. Year 3 pupils will then move onto family stereotypes and recognise stereotypical ideas about parenting and family roles.
At the end of the term, pupils will then look at what they are looking forward to when they move into their next class.

Year 4

Year 4 will look at understanding that everyone is unique, special and that some personal characteristics have come from birth parents. Pupils will then look at how a baby is made and that having a baby is a personal choice when an individual is an adult. Pupils will then look at puberty and menstruation, looking at how a girl's body changes in order for her to be able to have babies when she is an adult and that menstruation is a natural part of this. Pupils will then look at the circle of life and how this can be applied to changes that they want to make in their life. Pupils will then look at accepting change and identify changes that have been and may continue to be outside their control and how to accept these.
The last thing pupils will look at is looking ahead and what they are looking forward to as they move into their new class.

Year 5

In Year 5, pupils will look at self and body image, developing their own self-esteem. Pupils will then look at puberty for girls and how a girl's body changes during puberty and understand the importance of looking after themselves physically and emotionally, as well as understanding that puberty is a natural process that happens to others too. Pupils will then look at puberty for boys and the changes that happen during puberty and express how they feel about the changes that will happen to them during this time for both girls and boys. Pupils will then look at conception and understand that sexual intercourse can lead to conception and that is how babies are usually made.  Pupils will also look at understanding that sometimes people may need IVF to help them have a baby. Pupils will then look at what they are looking forward to about becoming a teenager and understand this brings growing responsibilities. 
Finally, they will look at what they are looking forward to when they move to their next class.

Year 6

Pupils will look at, and identify their own self-image and how their body image fits into that. They will be looking at developing their own self-esteem along with this.  They will further look at puberty and how the girls' and boys' bodies change, as well as their responsibilities and how their freedom and opportunities change as they grow older. Pupils will also look at babies and conception and describe how a baby develops from conception through the nine months of pregnancy and how the baby is born. Pupils will then look at boyfriends and girlfriends where they will look at understanding how being physically attracted to someone changes the nature of a relationship and what that might mean about having a girlfriend/boyfriend.  They will learn that respect for one another is essential in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship and that there should be no pressure on doing something that they do not want to do. Pupils will also look at knowing themselves well enough to maintain positive relationships with others whilst keeping their own identity. Pupils will then look at their real self and ideal self and discuss the importance of having positive self-esteem and how they can develop it.
At the end of the term, pupils will look at what they are looking forward to and any worries they may have as they transition into secondary school.
