DT Summer Term

Year 3 - Bread and Butter

In this unit of work, children cook wholemeal bread and make butter. They concentrate on how dairy products are made, as well as learning about different types of flour used to make bread. The first session introduces the children to the recipe by exploring different types of bread from around the world and learning how wheat is processed to make flour which can be made into bread. The second lesson introduces the children to where milk comes from and how it can be made into butter. This builds on knowledge gained from the geography curriculum where they learnt about how crops and dairy products are farmed. In session 3 children make the bread and butter and then taste and evaluate what they have made in session 4.

Year 4 – Moving Vehicles

This unit is called ‘Moving Vehicles’ and focusses on two areas of knowledge in the DT curriculum – axels and gears.  Children will use Spark Lab facilities to explore how gears work to create a moving mechanism before moving onto creating their own design for a vehicle. They will explore global issues such as pollution and design an environmentally friendly car for the future. After designing their vehicle, children will build their designs using gears and axels before evaluating their own and their peer’s designs.

Year 5- Honey Cake

In this unit of work, children cook honey muffins. The first session introduces the children to the recipe by exploring how honey is produced. This builds on knowledge from the science curriculum which explores the life cycle of a bumblebee. In session 2 children make the muffins and then taste and evaluate what they have made in session 3.

Year 6 – Upcycled Fashion

In this unit, children will design and create an upcycled garment from an old t-shirt for example. They start by considering the term ‘fast fashion’, what this means, how it is connected to globalisation and how consumers, designers and manufacturers can act to minimise its effect. Through this process of investigation, they are undertaking the first stage of the design process: researching and investigating the product they will produce. Children build on previously learnt skills in DT such as creating pattern pieces, using different stitches, plaiting and methods of decoration such as applique and embroidery. They will have the opportunity to practice these skills before completing their designs. They will then evaluate their designs and their peers.
