Intent

Our Geography curriculum aims to develop children’s view of the world around them through the acquisition of knowledge about the physical features and human processes within the world, alongside a continued development of geographical skills.

Our curriculum is knowledge-rich and provides pupils with an opportunity to study a range of locations both locally and around the world. Content is regularly revisited and builds upon prior knowledge allowing them to make meaningful connections and gain an understanding of how our world is connected.

We aim for children to have a strong understanding of Geographical concepts such as place, space and interconnectivity, which fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond this to ensure our children have a love of learning within Geography. 

Implementation

Our Geography Curriculum builds geographical expertise through studies of the local área, the United Kingdom and the Wider World.  This includes locational knowledge, understanding of human and physical features and geographical and fieldwork techniques. Pupils achieve depth in their learning by following a knowledge rich curriculum. The key knowledge and skills of each topic are mapped across the school to ensure knowledge is built progressively and that pupils develop skills systematically. At the end of each topic, the key knowledge is reviewed by the teacher and consolidated as necessary.

We use digital technology to support our learning and are able to use iPads to support our learning and are able to use digital maps to enhance our locational knowledge. Additionally, pupils have access to virtual reality headsets to explore areas studied around the world. We ensure our intent is carried out by following the national curriculum and by working alongside the Primary Knowledge Curriculum scheme.

Impact

At Howard Junior School, the impact of a knowledge rich curriculum will foster a love and enthusiasm for Geography.  The aim of the curriculum is to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people and environments. The scheme of work sets out the essential and disciplinary skills that encourage a deeper learning where pupils are able to think critically and ask perspective questions. In order to ensure our aims and intent are met, we assess the learning through multiple choice quizzes, written pieces or an end of a unit task.
