Autumn Term:
At Howard Junior School, we alternate our music curriculum termly. In the first half-term, pupils will be taught music each week through the English Model Music Curriculum of Charanga.
Year 3:
Year 3's Musical Spotlight is Writing Music Down. Pupils will learn rhythm (long and short) and pitch (high and low) sounds are represented by musical symbols which are written on a stave and named with special musical names. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore their social question: How Does Music Bring Us Closer Together? Pupils will be exposed to three different songs in two different genres: Home is Where The Heart Is in the style of Country, Let's Work it out Together, and Please Be Kind in the style of Pop. Using these songs, pupils will then play, improvise and compose using: C, D, E, F, G, A, B.
Year 4:
Year 4's Musical Spotlight is Musical Structures. Pupils will learn that musical sections that repeat or change help create the structure of a piece of music or song. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore their social question: How Does Music Bring Us Together? Pupils will be exposed to three different songs in three different genres: Hoedown in the style of 20th and 21st Century Orchestral, I'm Always There in the style of Soul Ballard and Martin Luther King in the style of Contemporary R&B. Using these songs, pupils will then play, improvise and compose using: C, D, E, F, G, A, B♭.
Year 5:
Year 5's Musical Spotlight is Melody and Harmony in Music. Pupils will learn that a melody (or tune) is a group of notes played one after another, whereas harmony is notes which are played at the same time. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore their social question: How Does Music Bring Us Together? Pupils will be exposed to three different songs in two different genres: Ghost Parade and Words Can Hurt in the style of 20th and 21st Century Orchestral and Joyful, Joyful in the style of Gospel. Using these songs, pupils will then play, improvise and compose using: C, D, E♭, E, F, F♯, G, A, A♭, B♭, B.
Year 6:
Year 6's Musical Spotlight is Music and Technology. Pupils will learn that music and songs are often created and composed using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and through the songs studied, there is a combination of live instruments with a DAW. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore their social question: How Does Music Bring Us Together? Pupils will explore three different songs in two different genres: Do What You Want To and Sunshine On A Rainy Day in the style of Soul, and It's All About Love in the style of Pop. Using these songs, pupils will then play, improvise and compose using: C, D, E, F, F♯, G, A, B♭, B.
