It's been a wonderful start to the year in Year 6, with a lot of work being put in by the pupils during September and lots of progress being made. This blog post looks at highlights across the first month, before we post weekly.
Maths
We have looked at place value - including rounding and negative numbers. We used our ipad to help visualise different concepts.
English: We have been reading 'The Firework-Maker's Daughter'. We've really enjoyed putting together a story based on this novel, and we are in the process of putting together our independent write - the story told from one of the character's perspectives. We even visited the setting of Ancient China in Virtual Reality!
Science: We have been learning about the human body and in particular, the circulatory system. We planned and conducted an investigation into how our heart rate is affected by exercise.
Art: We have been studying art in the Italian Renaissance. We have studied the art of Leonardo Di Vinci, as well as Michaelangelo. We have practised shading techniques as well as 'afumato' - the blending of colours as Di Vinci used.
History: In History, we have found learning about World War I fascinating - it's causes and what it was like for those in the trenches and on the home front.
Geography: In Geography, we have been looking at how the world is divided up into hemispheres, time zones and lines of latitude and longitude. We have also been studying how to use co-ordinates on a map.
PE: In PE, we have been learning about the skills needed for invasion games - in particular, hockey.
