Spring 2 - Week 2 - Learning & Achievements

What a fun-filled and busy week we have had in Year 4 - so much learning, achievements and special occasions celebrated. There are lots this week, so please enjoy reading and having a look!

Michael Rosen: Global Tales of Nature - How Things Came to Be:

On Monday we were lucky enough to be invited to an event held by the British Library. We listened to poems and stories about nature and even created our own characters based on nature!

Pancake Day:

On Tuesday we each had a chance to flip and eat our own pancakes - lots of toppings were chosen and full bellies! Thank you to Mrs Fowler-Holden and Miss Read for baking our pancakes and to Mrs Link for organising all the ingredients. It was a yummy morning!

World Book Day:

On Thursday we celebrated a day filled with books! Thank you parents for some amazing costumes. We enjoyed Miss Edgeley's rendition of the Highway Rat and enjoyed reading our own books and taking our own reading quizzes in our outside fort area! A huge well done to Phoebe and Norah for being our two lucky Golden Ticket winners - one for making your own Sealife Terrarium and one for winning hot chocolate and biscuits with Mr Paull! A huge well done to this pupil for winning best dressed in the class!

Maths: We continued our topic of multiplication and division. We focused on dividing a two-digit number by a 1-digit number. We used concrete resources such as place value counters to help us with dividing and also partitioning using part-whole models.

English: We had two more days of experience - one focusing on words which rhyme with rise and another creating posters based on bullying, a key theme in Maya Angelou's I Rise poem. We spoke about the effects bullying has, different types of bullying, ChildLine and what we can do if we are being bullied. We then started our first sentence stacking lesson, which focused on negative nouns and similes.

Science: We continued our topic of Sound by conducting an experiment to see how sound waves travel through the air. We went onto the field and were 5m away from Miss Edgeley. Using our stopwatches on our iPads, we measured how long it took for us to hear Miss Edgeley's clap. Using our data, we measured the speed by dividing distance over time to find an average.

Art: We started our new topic of Ancient Roman Monuments. Over the next half-term we will be constructing our own models of the Pantheon. We spoke about why monuments are important and wrote about our steps in creating the Pantheon, focusing on key structures: portico, dome and column.

PSHE: We continued our topic of Healthy Me by focusing on Group Dynamics. We were given different scenarios and discussed the different roles and characteristics children take on and how we can resolve these issues.

RE: We continued our worldview of Christianity and focused on forgiveness in the Bible. We read 5 different Bible stories: unforgiving servant, eye for eye, love your enemies, it is wrong to be angry and the Lord's Prayer. We discussed what Jesus says about forgiveness in the story, whether we thought this was a good example for a Christian to follow and if we would find it easy or difficult to forgive.

Spanish: Aprendo Espanol (Lesson 3). In this lesson we were able to say hello and good morning, introduce our names, ask others for their names, ask others how they were feeling and identify our own feelings.

PE: Outdoor Adventurous Activities with Mr Watson.

Guided Reading: Vocabulary and retrieval based on Great Graphic Novels.

Spellings: Oy and oi.

Handwriting: Consolidation of double b's.

Gap Analysis: In Maths we focused on multiplication and division facts of the 3x, 4x and 8x tables alongside soundcheck.

We are so proud of our Golden Pupil this week for showing resilience and determination with completing his work and having great ambition when discussing his future hopes and dreams. We are very proud!

We are so proud of our Star of the Week for showing great ambition and resilience in her reading - particularly giving up her breaks and lunchtime to achieve her reading certificates. It was no surprise she also won the double whammy for achieving the most knowledge points and taking the most quizzes on ReadTheory this week!

We are so incredibly proud of these three pupils for achieving their pen licences - they have consistently shown cursive handwriting and neat presentation!

It has been a long time coming... congratulations to the Four Leaf Clovers for being the winning Dojo Team this week!

Finally, an amazing number of pupils have earned their 10, 20, 30 and 40-point reading certificates. Half the class is now on track to achieving their 60-point reading certificate and a new book. Beyond proud of the motivation these children have for their reading - thank you parents for your support!
