Year 3 at Howard Junior School in Gaywood were visited by the Institute of Astronomy (IoA) Cambridge as part of their Space/Universe topic this term and were given a chance to handle real meteorites from outer space.
The IoA is a department of the University of Cambridge and is engaged in teaching and research in the fields of theoretical and observational Astronomy. Dr Sonali Shukla, the IoA’s full time outreach lecturer, gave a full interactive presentation of our solar system and beyond, which really inspired the children’s learning. This included allowing the pupils to handle and analyse real-life samples of meteorites, which had once fallen to Earth from outer space.
Organised by teacher, David Martin, the IoA adds to the growing list of educational partnerships with Howard Junior School which includes, John Lewis – Bringing Skills to Life, Educate Magazine, and now the University of Cambridge.
