Summer 1:
Year 3:
In this unit, children will listen to three songs from three different genres: He's Got The Whole World in His Hands in the style of Gospel, Why Does Music Make A Difference? in the style of Jazz and Panda Extravaganza in the style of Hip Hop. Children will explore the structure of songs: introduction, verse and chorus alongside recognising patterns in songs. They will then improvise over a section of a song. Children will play, improvise and compose using a selection of notes: C, D, E, F, F♯, G, G♯, A, B♭ and B. As the unit progresses, children will answer their social question of 'How Does Music Make a Difference to Us Every Day?'
Year 4:
In this unit, children will listen to three different songs from two different genres: 'Train is A-Comin' in the style of Gospel, Oh Happy Day in the style of Gospel and A World Full of Sound in the style of 20th and 21st Century Orchestral. Children will use improvisation as a way to express their feelings as music comes from the heart. Children will make their improvisation more expressive through the use of dynamics. Children will play, improvise and compose using a selection of these notes: C, D, E, F, F♯, G, A, B♭ and B. As the unit progresses, children will answer the social question of 'How Does Music Shape Our Way of Life?'
Year 5:
In this unit, children will listen to three different songs from three different genres: Look Into the Night in the style of Pop, Breathe in the style of 20th and 21st Century Orchestral and Keeping Time in the style of Funk. Children will use improvisation to express themselves and will use 'intervals' in their music to provide distance between two pitches. They will use some notes that lie right next to each other (stepping motion) and notes that lie further apart (skipping motion). Children will play, improve and compose using a selection of notes: C, D, E♭, E, F, F♯, G, A, B♭ and B. As the unit progresses, children will answer their social question of 'How Does Music Shape Our Way of Life?'
Year 6:
In this unit, children will listen to three different songs from three different genres: My Best Friend in the style of Soul, Singing Swinging Star in the style of Jazz: Swing and Roll Alabama in the style of Rock. Children will be singing and playing together in a band or ensemble. When they play together, they will use dynamics and expression and read a notated instrumental part. They will develop their listening skills and follow the leader. They will be changing dynamics to make the music more interesting through gradual changes from soft to loud (crescendo) and from loud to soft (decrescendo). Children will play, improvise and compose using a selection of notes: C, D, E, F, F♯, G, A, B♭ and B. As the unit progresses, children will answer their social question of: 'How Does Music Connect Us With Our Past?'
